The World Needs More Pilots

If you’re considering pilot training, the best time to become a pilot is now. Pilots are in high demand and airlines are partnering with flight schools across the country to train and recruit highly qualified pilots for their teams.

Over the next 20 years, it’s expected that over 600,000 pilots will need to be trained to keep up with the high demand. After starting a flight program, you can be certified and ready to work for a commercial airline in as little as a year.

There are numerous benefits to being a pilot such as work/life balance, job security, and the ability to travel all over the world, but despite these benefits, several factors have caused the pilot shortage.

Why Is There a Pilot Shortage?

There’s more than one reason why there’s such a high demand for pilots and why we’re currently experiencing a pilot shortage. Not only is an entire generation of pilots retiring without all of them being replaced, but the COVID-19 pandemic also impacted the number of aspiring pilots who chose to go to flight school.

The armed forces have also been the traditional training ground for pilots in the past, but with military numbers dwindling, it’s become necessary for aspiring pilots to take a different path to start an aviation career.

How Much Do Airline Pilots Make?

Becoming an airline pilot can be a rewarding career for numerous reasons, but many aspiring pilots wonder about airline pilot salary. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers is around $211,000.

The first-year pay for an airline pilot can vary from airline to airline. With Air Wisconsin, the starting salary for your first year is around $104,000 while the starting salary at SkyWest Airlines is closer to $102,000. For most first-year pilots, your starting salary will be at least $100,000.
